The Basics of Data Communication

Data communication is the primary element that connects us with the devices and services we rely on in our interconnected digital world. It includes a variety of techniques and media which dictate how information is transferred from one end to the next. Understanding how it works allows us to design a highly efficient and reliable network that delivers the benefits of greater connection like improved efficiency and productivity of businesses, and innovations within automation.

Data communication is the transfer of data between computers via a medium or channel. This could be accomplished via a wire cable or satellite signal, radio frequency, or wirelessly. A person or device that transmits data is referred to as the sender, while the computer that receives the data is referred to as the receiver. A data communication network could comprise more than two computer involved in a process of communication.

Multiplexing and Demultiplexing are two communication technologies that optimize bandwidth usage and reduce costs. Both of these processes require specialized hardware which can combine and separate signals. Custom integrated circuits are typically used to perform this function and are available in a variety of communication devices that include computers, cell phones, and printers.

Full-duplex communication is a type of data communications that allows simultaneous two-way communication within a pair of devices. This is a more complex mode than simplex transmission because it requires the ability of sending and receiving data at the same time.
